Backyard Decor that is Fun
Infuse some humor into your back yard décor to
enhance your personal signature.
Here are some ideas for
creating a fun backyard that will make you chuckle and lighten your
spirit.
Comical garden art is sure to give you a laugh. Look around at your
options and you’ll find many pieces of humorous décor. Some are as
simple and silly as a bronze frog sun tanning on a lily pad by your
pond or as fantastic as pair of concrete ruby red slippers from the
Wizard of Oz peeking out from the greenery. You also might find a
roughly custom-carved, cigar-smoking hill billy made from a tree
stump.
Whimsical garden ornaments can bring back memories of a special
time, person, place, or pet in your life. As an example, one
gardener decorated his back yard with the theme of growing up in
England. He had many different kinds of fairies peeking out from
behind the greenery and a spot to play hopscotch and marbles. The
owner had also made a giant-size chessboard of his two-toned patio
floor and had two-foot high chess pieces carved in wood!
In another yard, a landscaper used a miniature train in an original
design idea. Guests got a giggle out of the train carrying drinks
from the bar area, through the garden, to poolside lounges.
Add Color to Your Garden
A small burst of color anywhere in your yard sends a lighthearted
message. How about an electric blue mosaic birdbath in your formal
red rose garden, or bright red Adirondack chairs set in a rustic
all-brown yard? Or you might group two or three colorful items
together for a lively punch of fun.
Give free rein to your imagination! Put some everyday objects in
your garden. Take the serious, formal edge out of your back yard by
placing unusual items that make you look twice. For example, a
Victorian–wire headboard, a pair of old rubber boots planted with
flowers, a dressmaker's dummy with vines, dishes, teapots, and an
antique bathtub planted with herbs are some ideas!
Showcase a Special Collection
You can display some of your favorite things to add playfulness to
your garden or yard. You could arrange some wire insects in your
flowerbeds or hang antique garden tools from a wooden fence. A
unique collection of lanterns would look good on your patio tables
and give your guests something fun to talk about. If you have a wild
sense of humor, you could express it with some pink flamingos.
You can get campy and tacky if you want. The whole point is to show
that your back yard is a place to have fun and share some laughs.
You’re a person who knows that life is a dream and there’s no point
in taking things too seriously. It’s more fun to lighten up and
merrily enjoy the ride!
